Marvel’s Wolverine and Tōkon: Fighting Souls Swap Suits in a Gleeful Crossover Surprise

San Diego Comic-Con usually delivers its fair share of bombshells, but this year’s haul came with an unexpected twist. Between the fresh story trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine and the eye-popping animated intro for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, fans were already buzzing—but the real kicker landed when both games revealed they’re trading costumes like old teammates. Yes, Insomniac Games officially confirmed that each title will feature a skin inspired by the other, and the results are as delightfully weird as they are cool.

Let’s start with Logan’s new threads. In Marvel’s Wolverine, players will unlock an anime-styled outfit that keeps the classic blue-and-yellow X-Men palette but stretches those proportions into something far more stylized—think slimmer limbs, sharper angles, and a cel-shaded vibe that deliberately clashes with the game’s gritty, photorealistic world. It’s available right at launch, and while it might look a little out of place during those somber, claw-deep-in-enemy-flesh moments, that’s exactly what makes it such a treat for fans of the fighting game’s aesthetic.

Flip the coin, and Tōkon: Fighting Souls gets its own crossover love with the “Battle Reborn” outfit—a faithful translation of Insomniac’s original Wolverine design into the anime arena. The yellow-and-black armor is broken into segmented plates, giving it a heavier, more protective feel. Does it actually reduce damage? Probably not, but it sure makes you look the part. This skin drops on September 1st and will be free for every player, so no season-pass hassle there.

For those marking calendars: Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls slices onto PS5 and PC first, with its full release on August 6th and an open beta running from July 24th–26th—literally just around the corner. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Wolverine carves its own path on September 15th, exclusively for PS5 (and, given Sony’s current stance, don’t hold your breath for a PC port anytime soon). If you want to dig deeper, we’ve got extended gameplay footage and a closer look at Insomniac’s linear, globe-trotting take on the Canucklehead—just follow the links.

And because the internet loves a good official nod, Insomniac themselves fired off not one but two tweets to cement the deal: one celebrating Wolverine’s Tōkon suit at launch, and another confirming the Battle Reborn skin’s September arrival in the fighter. The takeaway? Two radically different games, one shared love for the best there is—and neither is afraid to borrow a little style from the other. Now, if only they’d trade voice actors…
