MindsEye’s Update 8 Quietly Rewrites the Ending – and Fans Are Freaking Out

If you thought MindsEye’s latest patch was just about a quirky new minigame and some balance tweaks, think again. Developer Build a Rocket Boy has apparently slipped a narrative bomb into Update 8—because the game’s ending has been fundamentally changed. According to social media account Everywhere NET (and corroborated by eagle-eyed players), the revised finale now sees protagonist Jacob Diaz transported to an entirely new world, where he’s greeted by a cryptic, unidentified figure. More intriguingly, the update layers in fresh lore concepts: Jacob is referred to as “the first of the chosen,” and reincarnation is now very much on the table. You can watch the new ending in the clip making rounds online—it’s already sparking wild theories.

Update 8 rolled out earlier this week across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and Build a Rocket Boy itself has been touting it as one of the game’s most significant updates to date. The studio’s official line is that it “deepens the single-player experience,” though the patch notes are curiously light on narrative details—the only explicitly listed single-player addition is the Silva E-Series: Summer Circuits, a time-trial race across the Redrock desert. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find that the mission “A Strange Happening” has been reworked, now sending players into a brand-new cave system to explore. Clearly, there’s more going on under the hood than the patch notes let on.

Of course, the headline-grabbing addition is the competitive multiplayer mode Grenade Football—a chaotic, five-versus-five affair where teams use grenade launchers to score goals in a high-octane sport that’s equal parts ridiculous and brilliant. We’ve covered that separately, but it’s worth noting that this mode alone would have made Update 8 a major event, even without the narrative curveball.

Rewind to April, and the previous major update—dubbed Blacklisted—took a very different tone. That one introduced a new mission series where players stepped into the boots of assassin Julia Black, tasked with eliminating two high-profile targets for the Meridian agency. So this pivot to existential lore and reincarnation feels like a sharp turn, and it’s clearly intentional.

But MindsEye‘s journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. The update arrives against a backdrop of controversy: CEO and CTO Mark Gerhard previously claimed the game had been sabotaged by external actors, stating that the studio had gathered “very strong evidence” and passed the matter to authorities in both the UK and the US. He’s since gone quiet on the subject, noting that the legal process will now take its course.

Meanwhile, May 2026 brought a fresh round of layoffs at Build a Rocket Boy, reportedly affecting around 170 employees—a fact confirmed by multiple staffers on LinkedIn, including audio designer Tom Cross and lead designer James Tyler. The studio also faced protests from former workers in early July, organized by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain, over an “all-expenses-paid playtest day” that was seen as tone-deaf given the recent job cuts.

All of which makes Update 8 land with extra weight. Whether the new ending is a creative reset, a response to internal turmoil, or simply the next step in a planned narrative arc, one thing’s for sure: MindsEye just got a whole lot more interesting. The community is already dissecting every frame of that new finale, and we’ll be watching closely to see what Build a Rocket Boy does next—because if reincarnation is real in this universe, Jacob Diaz might not be the only one coming back.
