Just when we thought the launch roster was stacked enough, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is already cranking the hype meter to eleven. Hot on the heels of his surprise appearance in Marvel Rivals, Scott Summers is trading in his standard optic blasts for cosmic firepower—because the very first challenger for the Year 1 Character Pass is none other than Phoenix Cyclops, and he’s scheduled to descend on the battlefield in Fall 2026.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t your average bespectacled team leader. This is Summers fully juiced on the Phoenix Force, wielding enough raw energy to make Galactus pause for thought. The game’s latest teaser gives us a perfect snapshot of his terrifying potential; even with Sentinel drones bearing down on their position, Storm hesitates to let him cut loose, warning that he’ll reduce everything around them “to ash.” Scott’s reply? A cool “I can control it”—followed immediately by a promise to save all of Mutantkind, and capped off with the delightfully ominous declaration: “The New Age of the Phoenix begins now!” If that doesn’t scream “final boss energy,” we don’t know what does.
For the lore junkies out there, this iteration of Cyclops hails straight from the chaotic Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event. To recap: the Phoenix Force was shattered and distributed among five hosts, with Summers sharing the cosmic entity’s power alongside Magik and three others. Despite their initial good intentions, their overwhelming might inevitably put them back on a collision course with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes—igniting a conflict that even Professor Xavier tried desperately to prevent.
Now, the million-dollar question is how this god-tier version of Cyke will factor into the Tōkon universe’s original narrative. With the heroes scrambling to muster every ounce of strength against the dreaded Champion, is Phoenix Cyclops the ace in the hole—or a ticking time bomb that could doom them all? We’ll get our answers when he drops exclusively for Year 1 Characters and Stage Pass holders this fall.
Patience, though—the devs have three more unannounced fighters waiting in the wings for the Year 1 Pass. Expect the drip-feed of reveals to kick into high gear shortly after the base game launches on August 6th for PS5 and PC. In the meantime, if you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and check out the game’s slick animated opening—it’s the perfect appetizer while we wait for the Phoenix to land.
